Level 1: Animals & Pets
Animals and pets bring some bright colors to our lives. We should love and take care of them, as they are almost like kids. They need protection and love. Thus, to know more about animals in English, let’s get acquainted with some new words.


- a small animal with big cheeks for storing and/or transporting food.
Example:
My daughter really wants to have a hamster, and I’m thinking of getting her one for her birthday.

- an animal that you keep at home as your companion.
Example:
Charlie has a few pets in his house - a cat, a hamster, and a parrot.

- the bird’s body covering.
Example:
This parrot’s name is Cacadoo, and it has extremely colorful feathers.

- a person who takes care of sick or hurt animals.
Example:
Charlie’s uncle is a professional vet, he can give you some advice considering your cat.
Bark (v. to bark) - sound dogs make.
Example:
My neighbor ’s dog always barks at me when I pass by their house.
Feathers - the bird ’s body covering.
Example:
This parrot ’s name is Cacadoo, and it has extremely colorful feathers.
Food bowl - a special container used for serving food to pets.
Example:
I cannot find my dog ’s food bowl.
ID tag - a little tag attached to the collar of a dog or cat with information about its owner.
Example:
In some countries, all pets must have ID tags to identify them in case they get lost.
Meow (v. to meow) - sound cats make.
Example:
My cat, Moris, usually loudly meows when he realizes that I ’m about to feed him.
Pet - an animal that you keep at home as your companion.
Example:
Charlie has a few pets in his house - a cat, a hamster, and a parrot.
Pet shop - a store that sells food and other goods for pets.
Example:
We are out of cat food, so we must go to a pet shop on our way home.
To bite - to use one ’s teeth to cut into something.
Example:
Don ’t touch this dog! It may bite you.
To walk (a dog) - to go for a walk with one ’s dog.
Example:
I will cook dinner in an hour. I need to walk my dog now.
Vet - a person who takes care of sick or hurt animals.
Example:
Charlie ’s uncle is a professional vet, he can give you some advice considering your cat.
Bird - a small animal covered in feathers that can fly.
Example:
The birds are singing in the garden.
Cat - a domesticated animal, covered in fur with a tail and whiskers. It is often kept as a pet to catch mice.
Example:
Cats are extremely popular on social media. Many videos with cats have millions of views and likes.
Chicken - a domestic fowl that produces eggs.
Example:
My grandfather keeps chicken for eggs and meat.
Cow - a female domesticated ox breed kept for milk.
Example:
This milk comes from an organic farm where cows are treated with love and care.
Dog - a domesticated mammal that has a great sense of smell, is covered in fur, and barks.
Example:
My dog is my best friend. He ’s particularly loyal and always defends me if he thinks that I am in danger.
Elephant - a large mammal native to Africa and Southern Asia that has a prehensile trunk, big ears, and ivory tusks.
Example:
In India, tourists often ride elephants, but I personally find this practice cruel and do not support it.
Fish - a limbless animal with fins and gills that lives in water.
Example:
Even though there are a lot of fish in this lake, fishing is prohibited here since it is a biosphere reserve.
Fox - a mammal of the dog family that has a notorious fluffy tail and usually has ginger fur.
Example:
Foxes are known to be particularly cunning and sly.
Hamster - a small animal with big cheeks for storing and/or transporting food.
Example:
My daughter really wants to have a hamster, and I ’m thinking of getting her one for her birthday.
Horse - a large mammal with hooves, mane, and tail often, used for racing, riding, and carrying carriages.
Example:
Owning a horse is rather expensive since it needs special treatment.
Kitten - a young cat.
Example:
Our rescue team found three homeless kittens in the park.
Lion - a large cat native to Africa that is usually tawny-colored. Male lions have a large mane.
Example:
Lion hunting is prohibited here, but some poachers still kill the lions in this area to sell their fur.
Monkey - a medium-sized primate that has a long tail and is native to tropical countries.
Example:
There is a theory that humans evolved from monkeys, but nobody can confirm that it is 100% correct.
Mouse (pl. mice) - a small animal that usually has a long tail and a pointed snout.
Example:
Cats were considered sacred animals in Ancient Egypt because they caught mice and therefore protected valuable grains in warehouses.
Puppy - a young dog.
Example:
My brother was so happy when we gave him a puppy for his birthday.
Rabbit - a mid-sized animal covered in fur, with long ears, and a short tail.
Example:
When I was a kid, I had a rabbit as a pet.
Sheep - a domesticated animal with a thick wooly coat and curved horns, usually kept for getting wool and sometimes milk and meat.
Example:
If you cannot fall asleep, you can try counting sheep going through a fence.
Tiger - a large cat with black and orange stripes native to Asian forests.
Example:
Meeting a tiger in the wild is quite dangerous, especially for inexperienced people.
