Level 1: Fashion
Even if you are not a fashionista, fashion plays a rather important role in your life since you still wear clothes and accessories. So let’s learn fashion vocabulary together.


- fashionable and elegant.
Example:
My friend Ann is particularly stylish. She has great taste and always looks flawless.

- a device used to keep track of time; usually worn on the wrist.
Example:
David just bought an expensive Rolex watch. I think he’s got a promotion and a significant pay raise.

- an outer garment with long sleeves and a fastening down the front.
Example:
It’s rather cold today, I need to go grab my jacket.

- men’s swimming shorts.
Example:
Have you got your trunks? There’s a huge pool in the hotel.
Fashionable - a word used to describe a person, object, or that’s dressed or looks trendy.
Example:
Miranda and her fashionable friends always follow the latest trends and dress simply stunningly.
Formal wear - clothing that is worn for formal events such as weddings, cotillions, state dinners, etc.
Example:
Usually, it is an evening gown for women and a tuxedo for men. What is the dress code for Emily's wedding?It’s formal wear of course!
Informal style - casual style of closing, meaning jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, etc.
Example:
Do you have any dress code at work?No, we don’t since most workers love the informal style and our boss does not think that white shirts, ties, and uncomfortable heels improve the workflow.
Stylish - fashionable and elegant.
Example:

To have a sense of style - to have a natural gift of dressing fashionably and stylish.
Example:
Scarlett is an editor in a fashion magazine. She has a great sense of style and knows how to write about fashion trends.
Accessory - a thing or object that can be added to a fashion look, meaning, bags, glasses, jewelry, headwear, etc.
Example:
I don’t like wearing too many accessories, especially in summer. I usually only wear earrings and my wedding ring as well as take a bag.
Bag - a container that comes in a variety of shapes and styles used for carrying things.
Example:
My husband got me a Chanel bag for my birthday.
Cap - a head covering used for protection from the sun.
Example:
Wear a cap before going outside. It’s very hot and you might get a heatstroke.
Hair clip - a small device that is used for holding the hair in various styles.
Example:
A bad hairdresser left Mary with too short bangs, so now she uses hair clips to fix her hair and hide a bad haircut.
Hairband - a band for tying one’s hair in a ponytail or other styles.
Example:
We recommend people with long hair tie it with a hairband so that they can comfortably and safely work out in our gym.
Hat - a covering for the head aimed to protect it from the sun and cold as well as serve as a fashionable accessory.
Example:
It’s rather cold and windy outside. Don’t forget your hat.
Purse - a small container, usually made of leather, used for storing and carrying money (A.E. a small ladies' handbag).
Example:
I lost my purse at the bus station and I have no money to return home.
Scarf - a piece of fabric, usually wool, that is worn around the neck.
Example:
I don’t really like scarves but I do wear them when it’s cold outside because they help me stay warm.
Straw hat - a summer hat made of straw.
Example:
Your recent pictures on the beach in that large straw hat are simply amazing.
Wallet - a pocket-sized folded container used for carrying cash.
Example:
Have you seen my wallet? I need to pay for the gas.I have no idea, maybe it’s in the trunk.
Watch - a device used to keep track of time; usually worn on the wrist.
Example:
David just bought an expensive Rolex watch. I think he’s got a promotion and a significant pay raise.
Blouse - a ladies' shirt.
Example:
This red blouse will go well with your black skirt.
Coat - an outer garment with long sleeves that usually extends below the hips.
Example:
It’s rather cold in Minnesota, so don’t forget to get a warm coat before your trip.
Dressing gown - a long robe usually made of cotton that is worn before and/or after showering or bathing.
Hoodie - a hooded garment worn on the upper body.
Example:
You cannot go to aunt Mary in this hoodie. It’s too informal.
Jacket - an outer garment with long sleeves and a fastening down the front.
Example:
It’s rather cold today, I need to go grab my jacket.Ann walked out of the bathroom in her pink fluffy dressing gown.
Nightie - a ladies’ one-piece nightwear.
Example:
I think I forgot to pack my nightly. I’ll quickly check it because I have to make sure I have something to sleep in during our vacation.
Pajamas - a garment, usually two pieces (top and bottom one), that is worn to bed.
Example:
I forgot my favorite pajamas in the hotel in London.
Raincoat - a waterproof coat with long sleeves and hood worn on the upper body.
Example:
It’s going to rain in the afternoon, so I took my raincoat just in case.
Shirt - a piece of clothing usually made of cotton or linen with a row of buttons on the front part.
Example:
All the men in our office are required to wear shirts because we have a formal dress code in the office.
Sweater (B.E. jumper) - a knitted garment, usually with long sleeves, worn on the upper body.
Example:
I knitted Dan a sweater for his birthday.
T-shirt - a short-sleeved top that has the shape of the letter T when spread out.
Example:
I think these jeans will look great with a simple white cotton T-shirt.
Bikini - ladies' two-piece garment worn for swimming.
Example:
Do you prefer one-piece swimsuits or bikinis?One-piece. I’m too shy and insecure about my body to wear a bikini.
Dress - a ladies’ one-piece garment that covers the torso and hangs down the legs.
Example:
I just found my perfect wedding dress. It’s made of off-white silk and decorated with pearls.
Jeans - denim trousers.
Example:
Levi’s trousers are the most popular jeans in the world.
Shorts - short trousers.
Example:
Ben, I think you should wear your shorts today. It’s pretty hot outside.
Skirt - a ladies’ garment fastened around the waist and extending down around the legs.
Example:
I don’t like skirts. It’s just not my style. I prefer good old jeans.
Swimsuit - a ladies' garment worn for swimming.
Example:
We’re going to Florida next Friday, so I bought a new swimsuit.
Trousers (A.E. pants) - a garment that covers the body from waist to ankles with separate parts for each leg.
Example:
I usually don’t wear trousers in summer because it’s too hot.
Trunks/Swimming shorts - men’s swimming shorts.
Example:
Have you got your trunks? There’s a huge pool in the hotel.Yeah, I’ve got them.
Shoes - a feet covering that does not reach above the ankle.
Example:
Louboutin shoes are insanely expensive, but that elegant red sole is worth all the money in the world.
Socks - a cotton, wool, or nylon garment for the feet.
Example:
I usually sleep in socks because my feet always get cold.
Bra - a ladies' undergarment used to support the breasts.
Example:
Selecting a bra that will perfectly fit you is actually pretty challenging, so don’t be afraid to ask a shop assistant for help.
Pants(B.E)/Panties - underpants.
Example:
Victoria’s Secret panties are cute but rather overpriced.
Underwear - garments worn underneath the clothes and close to the skin.
Example:
Do you mind going to the shopping mall after lunch? I would like to buy some new underwear.
