Nowadays, pretty much everyone uses computers, smartphones, as well as other gadgets, yet not many people who learn English know how to talk about modern technologies. This is why we suggest you learn modern technology vocabulary with us.

Access to the internet - the ability to connect to the internet.
Example:
I’m sorry I didn't text you back. I was in a village in the mountains, and I did not have access to the internet.

Social media/ Social media networks/ Social networks - apps and websites that allow people to create accounts and interact with each other online, meaning posting, liking, and commenting on content, chatting, having video calls, etc.
Example:
Because of social media, more and more people have fewer actual friends.
To back up your files - to make another copy of your data on another device or cloud storage.
Example:
If possible, make sure to back up your files before sending your computer in for repair because you may lose all your data.
To crash - to break down suddenly.
Example:
The program we use at work crashed, and we were not able to work all day.
To install (a program/an app) - to set up a program, application, video game, etc.
Example:
You need to install our official app and place your order via it to get a discount.
To shop online - to purchase goods in online shops, using websites, applications, etc.
Example:
I prefer to shop online since, usually, the choice in online stores is much wider.

Website/ Site - a set of web pages on a single domain.
Example:
You can find all the information in the FAQ section on our official website.
Account/ Profile - a person’s page on any social media network.
Example:
I think my account has been hacked because I cannot log in even though I’m hundred percent sure I’m using the right password.
Blogger - a person who regularly makes content for social media and makes money on it.
Example:
Popular bloggers earn a lot of money.
Followers/ Subscribers - people who follow a certain page on social media not to miss new content.
Example:
Kate is a rather popular influencer. She has 2 million followers on Instagram and 500K subscribers on YouTube.
Influencer - a person (usually a blogger) who exerts influence.
Example:
Some influencers set up rather dangerous trends, such as extreme dieting or smoking and drinking.
Like - an action that allows one to express their admiration for someone’s content.
Example:
This is one of my most popular posts - it got 250K likes.
Live stream - a live broadcast over the internet.
Example:
I usually do at least two live streams per week, and I think I’m gonna go live tonight.
Login/ Username - a code, text, or email used while registering and logging in.
Example:
Make sure to remember your username and password because you will need those to log into your account.
Password - a code or combination of symbols used to log into one’s account.
Example:
You need to create a strong password to minimize the chances of your account being hacked.
To follow - to opt to see the posts of the people you follow in your feed.
Example:
If you don’t want to miss any updates, make sure to follow me.
To like - to express your admiration about someone else’s post on social media.
Example:
Mike just liked my post. Do you think that means that he’s attracted to me?
To log in/ To sign in - to enter one’s username (or email) and password to gain access to an account or any other computer system.
Example:
Please, sign in or create an account to proceed with the purchase.
To log out/ To sign out - to do certain actions to leave your account or computer system.
Example:
Make sure to sign out of all your accounts when you are done because this computer is used by many other people, and you don’t want them to get access to your account.
To post/ To make a post - to share content on social media, e.g., photos, text, or videos.
Example:
I just made a post about my trip to Spain last week. Please check it out and let me know what you think about it.
To sign up/ To register/ To create an account - to create a profile on a certain website, app, database, etc.
Example:
Please, sign up to unlock access to all our content.
To subscribe/ To get a membership - to agree to receive certain services in exchange for a fixed fee.
Example:
I got a premium membership on this website, so I can watch any movie I want until my membership expires.
