Level 1: Shopping
Shopping is one of those activities that can easily put you in a good mood, especially abroad. At the same time, if you do not know shopping vocabulary, it may be pretty stressful for you. Therefore, let us dive into the beginner-level vocabulary.


- a person who purchases goods or services.
Example:
Our store has regular discounts for our loyal customers.

- a place where goods are placed.
Example:
When the pandemic started, the shelves in our local grocery stores were empty because people started panicking and mindlessly purchasing everything.

- a basket on wheels for carrying goods around a supermarket.
Example:
I don’t see any available carts, so we might have to go to another supermarket because we need to buy a lot of things, and carrying everything in your hands is not an option.

- a shop where flowers are sold.
Example:
Early in the morning, Oliver went to the florist’s to get flowers for his wife.
Basket - a small container for carrying goods around a store.
Example:
I think this cart is too big. A basket will be enough.
Cash - money in the form of coins and notes.
Example:
Do you accept cashless payments?No, sorry. Cash only.

Customer - a person who purchases goods or services.
Example:

Example:
These boots were at a 50% discount, so I decided to purchase them.
Goods - products that are available in a store.
Example:
Please, put your goods in a shopping bag and take your receipt.
Lift/Elevator - a compartment in a shaft used for lifting and lowering things or people to different levels.
Example:
Excuse me, where is the women’s clothing department?It’s upstairs. You can take an elevator. It’s right behind you.
Online shopping - a process of purchasing goods online.
Example:
Online shopping is way less tiring than offline one.
Online store/shop - a website or mobile application selling goods.
Example:
I’m planning on opening an online store since I do believe that e-commerce has way more potential than an offline one.
Shelf - a place where goods are placed.
Example:

Shopping bag - a paper or plastic container for carrying the goods from a store.
Example:
We no longer provide free shopping bags for our goods, so you have to buy one.
Sale - a period during which the shops provide discounts on selected goods.
Example:

Shop/Store - a place where goods are sold.
Example:
You can buy groceries in the local shop.
Shopping - the process of browsing and buying things.
Example:
Wanna go shopping?Sure! I’d like to buy a new bag.
To buy/Purchase - to get something in exchange for money.
Example:
I really want to buy these shoes, but they are way too expensive for me.
Baker's - a shop where bread and other bakery products are sold.
Example:
Tomorrow morning, I’ll buy cinnamon rolls for breakfast at the baker’s downstairs.
Bookshop - a store where books are sold.
Example:
The author will meet the fans in a local bookstore.
Butcher's - a shop where meat is sold.
Example:
I prefer buying meat from our local butcher’s store because meat from supermarkets is not always good and eco-friendly.
Florist’s - a shop where flowers are sold.
Example:

Ladies clothing shop/Boutique - a store where women’s clothing is sold.
Example:
I found a gorgeous dress in a boutique down the street.
Market - a place where sellers and buyers meet to sell and buy goods respectively.
Example:
You can find the best fruits and vegetables in the local market.
Men’s clothing shop/Tailor’s - a store where men’s clothing is sold.
Example:
I have to buy a new suit for work. Let’s check out this men’s clothing shop.
Post office - a company department responsible for postal services where you can send or receive parcels and letters as well as buy stamps, postcards, etc.
Example:
I got this beautiful postcard at the post office in Amsterdam.
Supermarket - a large store selling groceries, various household items, and sometimes even clothing and different appliances.
Example:
Every Saturday morning, we go to the supermarket to get groceries for the entire week.
Toy shop - a store where toys are sold.
Example:
When I was a teen, I used to work in a toy shop in our local mall.
