Level 1: Hobbies

Acting - the art of performing fictional characters in theater, movies, or on television.

Example:

I am an accountant, but acting is my passion.

Baseball - a team game played on a diamond-shaped circuit of four bases, which is popular in the United States and Canada.

Example:

Would you like to play baseball this Saturday with us?No, thank you. I’m not into sports.

Basketball - a team game with five players in each team in which the scores are gained by tossing the ball through a raised goal.

Example:

Basketball is my favorite sport.Really? Do you play it?I used to, but now I prefer watching it.

Bodybuilding - a sport that focuses on strengthening and growing muscles.

Example:

I don’t think that bodybuilding is a good sport because many athletes take hormones to build muscles faster, which is really unhealthy.

Bowling - a game in which you roll a heavy ball down a narrow track towards a group of bowls, aiming to knock down as many of them as possible.

Example:

I’m not a big fan of bowling, but sometimes I play with my friends.

Boxing - a sport of fighting with fists in padded gloves on a square ring.

Example:

Boxing is a great way to relieve stress for both men and women.

Camping - an activity that involves going outdoors and living in a tent.

Example:

Camping is definitely not for me. I prefer hotels.

Chess - a strategic board game in which two players move the figures according to the set rules on a checkerboard.

Example:

People who play chess are usually very intelligent.

Cooking - a skill or practice of preparing food.

Example:

There was a time when I didn’t like cooking, but now I cannot imagine my life without it.

Dancing - an activity of rhythmically moving one’s body to music; depending on a style and/or direction, has a set of steps, moves, turns, and other elements.

Example:

Dancing is my biggest passion in life, and becoming a professional dancer is my biggest dream.

Driving - the process of operating a motor vehicle.

Example:

Driving calms me down. So whenever I feel angry or sad, I get in my car and drive around the city.

Drums - a musical percussion instrument.

Example:

Playing drums has been my hobby since I was twelve, but a few days ago, I received and accepted an invitation to join a band, so I guess I'm a professional now.

Drawing - the process of creating pictures by means of a pencil, crayon, or pen.

Example:

Drawing used to be a way to relax for me, but somehow it became my profession. Amazing, isn’t it?

Eating out - eating at restaurants and cafes.

Example:

I hate sports, and I’m bad at arts and crafts, so my hobby is eating out.

Football/soccer - a team sport that is played in two teams of eleven players each where each team strives to goal a ball into the opponent’s gate.

Example:

I honestly don’t know why soccer isn’t popular in the United States. Most people there play American football.

Gardening - a leisure activity that focuses on cultivating and tending a garden.

Example:

Believe it or not, gardening is a rather stress-relieving activity.

Magic tricks - the art of performing magic tricks.

Example:

When I was a kid, magic tricks were my biggest passion, but now I don’t find it that interesting.

Piano/keyboard - playing a keyboard musical instrument.

Example:

My New Year’s resolution is to learn how to play the piano.

Painting - the process of creating pictures by means of paints.

Example:

I am really bad at painting, but it's more like art therapy for me.

Reading - the activity or leisure of reading books.

Example:

I don’t have any hobbies, but I do love reading. So I think that’s my hobby.

Running - a sports activity that focuses on jogging on either short or long distances.

Example:

Running helps me forget about all my problems and just relax.

Singing - an activity of performing songs.

Example:

Singing has been Erica’s passion since she was 10.

Swimming - a sports activity of moving through the water.

Example:

I used to be a professional swimmer, but now swimming is only a leisure activity for me.

Traveling - an activity that involves visiting different places, cities, and/or countries.

Example:

Traveling is a great hobby, but it is perhaps the most expensive one since some trips cost insane money.

Video games - a hobby that involves playing games designed for computers or consoles.

Example:

Apart from video games, Dan doesn’t have any hobbies.

Watching TV - an activity of watching shows and movies on television.

Example:

Do you have any hobbies?I don’t know if watching TV is a hobby, but for me, it is.

Yoga - a spiritual and physical activity that involves a certain set of exercises (asanas) and meditation.

Example:

I love yoga because it helps me stay both physically and mentally healthy.
