Basement

- a level below the ground (first) floor, usually without windows.

Example:

Yard/Backyard

- an outdoor area around the house.

Example:

  • Garden - a piece of land outside a house used for growing flowers, trees, etc.

  • Hall - a space or room inside the front entrance.

    Example:

    We are going to paint the walls in the hall next weekend.

  • Kitchen - a room equipped for preparing food.

    Example:

    When I lived in NYC, I rented an apartment with a ridiculously small kitchen because I couldn’t afford anything better.

  • Living room - a room in a house or an apartment used for entertaining guests and relaxing.

    Example:

    We have just finished redecorating our living room, so we invite you for dinner next Saturday.

  • Roof - a structure that forms the upper covering of a house, apartment building, or any other building.

    Example:

    The roof in my parents’ house is leaking, so I’m thinking of changing it as a present for their 30-year anniversary.

  • Yard/Backyard - an outdoor area around the house.

    Example:

    I have a pool in my backyard.

  • Wall - a vertical structure made of bricks or stone that divides or encloses an area.

    Example:

    The walls in our apartment building are so thin that we hear our neighbors even if they whisper.

  • Bathtub - a long container made of ceramic, metal, or plastic used for bathing.

    Example:

    I really liked the apartment in your building, but I wish there was a bathtub. You see, I have a 6-months-old baby, and I simply cannot bathe her in the shower.

  • Bookshelf - a shelf for storing books.

    Example:

    These in-built bookshelves in the living room are super useful.

  • Lamp - a device that provides light and works from electricity.

    Example:

  • Microwave - a small oven used for heating up food.

    Example:

    We can have dinner leftovers for lunch. I’ll heat them up in a microwave.

  • Pool - a relatively small artificial area, filled with water used for swimming.

    Example:

    We’re currently thinking of building a pool in our backyard.

  • Shower - a cubicle used for bathing.

    Example:

  • Soap - a substance used for cleaning and washing.

  • Stairs/stairway - a structure that consists of a series of steps and connects floors.

    Example:

  • Toaster - a small kitchen appliance used for toasting bread.

    Example:

  • Toilet - a device connected to water and sewage used for defecating and urinating.

    Example:

    When I saw that stylish black toilet in the store, I immediately realized that we had to design our bathroom in black and white colors.

  • Toilet paper - soft paper used for cleaning oneself after defecation and urination.

    Example:

    We only have one toilet paper roll left. Can you get some on your way back home?

  • Toothbrush - a small brush used for cleaning teeth.

    Example:

    I left my toothbrush at home. I need to buy a new one.

  • Towel - a piece of soft fabric used for drying oneself or other objects after washing.

    Example:

  • TV - a device that receives television signals.

    Example:

    There is a TV in the guest bedroom. Feel free to use it.
